The building where the Diplomat Hotel is located today has a rich and unique history, closely connected with the architectural and cultural development of St. Petersburg. Built in 1882 in the spirit of eclecticism, it became part of the wave of construction of luxurious apartment buildings and mansions in the northern capital at the end of the 19th century. The author of the project was Vladimir Akhillesovich Reis, a famous architect who left a noticeable mark on the architectural appearance of the city.

Initially, the building belonged to Pavel Grigoriev, a representative of a wealthy family, and included not only residential premises, but also stables, which was typical for houses of this level at that time. The house was distinguished by a rich façade and clear symmetry, corresponding to the aesthetics of its time. The interiors, according to surviving sources, were made with classical elements and decorative details, which emphasized the status of the owner.

In 1988, the building at 7 Degtyarny Lane was featured in the cult Soviet film "Heart of a Dog." In the scenes with the passing tram, it was this façade that became the background for the iconic scenes, which is why the building was associated with one of the most important works of Russian cinema.
